What Reviewers Said About NOT GUILTY NOT INNOCENT

NOT GUILTY NOT INNOCENT

A murder mystery tackled from the point of view of a lawyer rather than a detective with the culprit becoming clear during the course of the trial. There are four murders: one premeditated; one attempted; one self-defence and one revenge and they all have different perpetrators and all get their comeuppance in a circle of power and corruption. Valda has scrapes of her own and never fully comes clean despite her complicity – hence the book title. Tim Logan

The highlight of this book for me was the trial, which was written with great legal accuracy as well as with forensic detail and a fair share of drama, put downs and wit as in any real life trial. Money is the root of all evil, as goes the cliché, but it is very true in this book – other than Jack who is an honourable character, all the others live by the money-sword and die by it. The characters are true to life, but not in a way that gives you faith in human nature. A good read, free flowing, with excellent use of language and vernacular. Got a real feel for the locations as well. Vicky Anne

I really enjoyed Not Guilty Not Innocent. The opening sequence in Belfast had me hooked straight away and I wondered what the lawyer was doing there and then I found out he was bailing out some London émigré Russian’s gangster’s moll and I just knew this was going to get tasty. I didn’t quite get how Valda, the rock and roll singer, got to meet the lawyer, Jack, and maybe there is just a shade too much coincidence in the fact that they meet in Belfast and they are both involved in one way or another with the same gangsters back in London. But it all made for a rattling rollercoaster of a ride once they’d crossed the Rubicon and those gangsters were coming after them. OHSoccermom

Now this is a real thriller with interwoven plots and enough edginess to keep you turning the pages. The two main characters, Valda Kramer and Jack Lauder, come from entirely different molds and I never would have suspected those two to get together. The author did an incredible job in developing their relationship with enough steam, tension and verity to keep me pulling for both of them.

Jack is out of the same mold as Indiana Jones and Valda, well, I’d peg her as a cross between Amy Winehouse and Kinsey Millhone. Separately and together, they take us through a complicated murder that involves British politicians, a Russian mobster and a full cast of dubious, eccentric and impish characters and witnesses. The trial itself is strained with enough tension to keep even the most skilled criminal defense attorney guessing.
All in all, I can’t recommend this book enough!  Paul H Landes – Bestselling Author

DEAR LEILA – Chicklit Humour Book 99c on amazon Until Sept 3

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00056]

Sex and the City meets Bridget Jones in a laugh out loud chick-lit tale of two women in two cities.

When Leila and Kimi reignite a high friend school friendship via an on-line exchange some years later, the results are a hilarious batch of frank and feisty emails flying across the Atlantic.

Leila, in London, is single and playing the field with the emphasis on playing. Kimi is in NYC heading for splitsville with her cranky and possibly cheating hubbie. They bare all in their spicy emails to each other about the bad, mad and dangerous to know of the male world and how there is a fine line between love and farce.

A thoroughly modern and quirky tale of life, love and lust in 2015 and how social media has lead to a very new moral or immoral code.

Funny, lively and fast moving.

Warning: Some bad lingo and mild sexual content.

REVIEWS

This book tells the tale of two women’s lives via the vehicle of their email exchanges. As the book takes the form of emails it is very in intensive in terms of action as there are no lengthy descriptions or irrelevant waffle it’s just frank banter and heart to heart revelations. The author kinda gets how in the cyber world we reveal stuff and do stuff we would not do in ‘real’ life as somehow what goes down in cyberspace, stays in cyberspace..or does it.

Both Kimi and Leila have rather modern attitudes about love and dating and they certainly don’t take no prisoners. Although this is a light-hearted read, some more serious issues ie stalking, divorce and affairs are tackled in a realistic way.

This is a very lively and pacey book and you will be pleasantly amused by the many unexpected turns.

I know another review criticized the grammar of this book; but I feel that it was written in a highly colloquial way and just how one writes when we write emails – it is not meant to be written like a novel where all the syntax is dead right. It’s conversational.
It’s fast moving and very modern. The author does not dwell on things; it’s really about having a laugh and not to be taken seriously like a full length novel.
This is the first time that I’ve read a story that was told entirely through email transactions, and I have to say that I quite liked it! That was definitely a very clever way of telling a story and I think the author executed it well. This is a fun, short, and fast-paced read that can easily be read in one setting (trust me, you’ll want to!). Can’t wait to see more from this author.

This was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read recently. It was well written, engaging and suspenseful! A must read for suspense fans!
At first I knew what to expect but as the book progressed it became more challenging to figure out the missing pieces of the puzzle. I liked this book a lot, quick read, entertaining, twists and thrills!

It took a little time to get wrapped up in it, not due to a poor quality of writing but rather the author carefully laying the groundwork for the story. If you like classic “who done its” in the style of Hitchcock, you will enjoy this story.

Memories are not always a good thing. Sometimes they are scary and should stay locked away. However the truth should be known. I was worried what would happen to Gaby. There are a lot of moments in the book when I was surprised. There are a few plots that I had no idea how they were connected until the author told me. The ending was fitting for Gaby and I liked how the author tied up loose ends. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

Things was an interesting and quick read in which the author kept me engaged throughout the book. Be careful because once the ball gets rolling in this one, you won’t be able to put it down. Despite knowing who the murderer was fairly early on, Gordon does an amazing job at keeping you interested and engaged throughout the story. I did have to use the dictionary/Wikipedia feature on my kindle for some of the language but the book was definitely worth the little bit of extra “work” & I look forward to reading another book from this author soon.

A string of murders dating back to 1987 and in all that time only one witness and she doesn’t even know she’s a witness!

Young lawyer Gaby has recently married and should be having the time of her life and yet a strange recurring dream is haunting her; she visits a psychologist and a psychic as she desperately attempts to figure it out. Then……it hits her; the memory floods back! Suddenly everything she thought she knew about herself, her family and her past is cast into doubt.

Someone she loves is a KILLER.

But who will believe her? He is popular, successful, charming and credible. The police will say that she has no evidence. People will call her mad, paranoid and spiteful. She must act fast; he is becoming more frenzied and is eyeing up his next victim.

Gaby selects her allies with great care, trusting few in her duplicitous new world and knowing every new piece of evidence she uncovers makes her more vulnerable.

She sets about assembling the evidence: secretively and urgently, before he strikes again. However, he gets wind of her suspicions and this time when he kills, it’s someone very close to Gaby, someone who knows the truth.

Suddenly she realises that she is up against more than just him: he has eminent and influential friends and the scales of justice are rigged against her.

What would you do? What will Gaby do?

A book that will make you wonder if you can ever trust anyone again and the safe answer…..is NO.

When five friends go to a psychic for a reading; the predictions make no sense at all because they just cannot envision the tragic circumstances in which everything the psychic says will come to pass.

A group of relatives and pals agree to go for a group reading with a mysterious psychic: their emotions range from eager anticipation to nervous excitement and in the case of Sasha a poo-poing and putting it all down to hocus pocus entertainment.

Yesod catches their attention with pin point accuracy about their pasts and inner conflicts; however her predictions about the future appear to some baffling and out of sync with the reality they all know. Even sceptic Sasha is thrown off kilter by Yesod’s apparent inability – or was it rather a disguised refusal – to read her.

The session strikes a chord of confusion and self doubt into Lee and Gemma; but was the reading so elliptical for Lianne. Did she read something into it the others have missed? Why does Lianne go asking pertinent questions about her past while alienating herself from the others?
Michelle is overcome with guilt: she believes she knows that her own dirty secret lies behind Lianne’s strange behaviour. Confiding in Lee, she reveals all.
But is Michelle’s hunch correct or is the truth so deeply buried in the psyche of one of the other friends that even Yesod could not perceive it.

Seemingly unbreakable friendships are wrecked in a web of deception, lies and infidelity and someone will pay the ultimate price. Nothing is as it seemed and nothing will ever be the same again.

Some skeletons are best left in the closet.

I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review. When I started the book, I was thinking where is this going, maybe I picked the wrong book. After a few pages, ooh my! I couldn’t stop reading. After 3:30 in the night. I finished and I have to say, it is one of the better books I’ve read. The author is now on list of must read.

This review is from: Next of Sin: A psychological thriller (Kindle Edition)
This is one of those stories where the author lets you know early on who the villain is, and that’s not a bad thing, because the story is more about discovery and burden of proof. The main character, Gabrielle, is forced into a position where she knows who the villain is, but also knows she can’t go to the police immediately because he’s a powerful and wealthy man, with an even more powerful father, leaving Gabrielle with the simple knowledge that if she didn’t present irrefutable proof to the authorities, the villain would easily weasel his way out of justice using his money and status. Another thing I enjoyed about this novel was the twists and turns, you feel like you’ve got the story down and suddenly the author makes a sharp turn and blam, the game is on all over again, I enjoyed that, it kept me guessing until the very end.

Although Gabrielle is clearly a flawed character, she discovers more about herself and what is really important in life as the story goes forward. Some of Gaby’s personality traits are a bit annoying, but I think they’re integral in portraying who she was at the beginning of the book versus who she is at the end. She’s imperfect on many levels, something I think we can all relate too to some degree…

I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review. I enjoyed the book immensely. It was fast paced and exciting with several unexpected twists and turns. As an American, I did have a little trouble with some of the colloquial references and some of the ideology of the pop culture in England. However, that did not impede my enjoyment of the story. If you like great characters with realistic dialogue, this is the book for you.

I almost gave up but about a quarter of the way through it, the story started coming together. After that breakthrough, I could hardly put it down. The British colloquium was hard to follow but the book had sucked me in and I was determined to finish even if I didn’t quite understand what the phrases meant. Over all, a good book with lots of twists and turns the reader won’t foresee. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars but that option is not available. George, the part-owner of an investment bank funded by black money, is on his way to the former Soviet Republic of Lithuania to conclude what his Lithuanian contacts think is a big deal but which he knows is a scam. His Armani suit, Gucci cufflinks and Prada shoes disguise a man who is losing his touch. It is his ex-wife? Is it his boss? Is it his bank? He is not sure, but he can sense the knives are out.

George thinks he is going to line his banks pockets at the expense of his Lithuanian victims saving face in the process, but the Baltic crew prove to be much more savvy than he had thought.

George, a firm believer in mixing business with pleasure, goes in search of female company in Vilnius. He finds more than he bargained for at a local nightclub in the shape of the magnificent Zoya, who wrecks both his bed and his head before taking off into the dark, Baltic night, leaving George with a monumental hangover or something worse.

He suspects he has been on the wrong side of a Mickey Fin, but there is no apparent reason, because nothing seems to be missing, not least the bank codes which are the key to his scam.

Feeling rough, he attends the hospital where another surprise awaits him, he encounters the night doctor….Zoya. Is there a connection between this apparent angel of the former KGB wards and the woman of the night who left him with such a devastating headache? Is he imagining things?

Obsessed now with what happened to him and why, George gets back to business only to find that his lost evening was a warning and the doctor doesn’t prescribe twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Banker Bashing 18 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Since 2008 bankers have been persona non grata and so many of you may enjoy the fact that George, a banker who is arrogant and pompous gets a taste of his own medicine quite literally.

The author tells the story though George’s eyes: we know how he feels about himself, we know about his mid-life crisis and eagerness to re-prove himself we know his perceptions of others, we know his quirks and limitations and we know how reacts to circumstances. Because we are so in his head, we are just as confused as him about what is actually going on and about who is who in the zoo as it were. This really is a clever way of telling the story and makes for great interest and suspense.

Is George losing mind or is has the self styled Artful Dodger of the banking world finally waded out of his depth.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
George is in Lithuania, but the former Soviet State has changed and George hasn’t.

George considers himself the Artful Dodger of the Investment Banking world and he is pretty sure he can pull the wool over the Capitalism Freshers who are bounded to be steeped in tin pot Soviet ideas.

When he meets Tomas the representative of his Lithuanian target, he thinks, “make the baboons do the work and trap the prey and then you amble up at your leisure and take the kill off them while they stand screeching at you from a safe distance.” But has he underestimated Tomas?

While George mentally dismisses the male comrades he is more than happy to keep a female comrade warm and it is with this purpose that he heads off into the night eventually landing up at the Indigo Bar where he meets the mysterious Zoya.

He wakes up the next day wondering what hit him and instead of being at an important meeting, he is laid up in hospital where he experiences a take two with a woman he is certain is Zoya, The Night Doctor.

Although George is more Delboy that the Wolf of Wall St, you grow to like him and to fear for him – is he being set up as a fall guy? As the reader you see the plot unfolding through George’s eyes and you are just as confused as him about who to trust and who or what to believe.

A book that not only keeps you guessing, but which presents both a bizarre and confusing bunch of characters who will entertain you with their banter and enthral you from the get go.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mix of Suspense and Mystery 1 Sep 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Excellent novel that mixes the elements of both suspense and mystery. George, a part-owner of an investment bank that is funded by black money, gets more than he bargained for throughout his venture. He is losing his touch, but who is he losing it to? He gets into a bit of trouble in Vilnius, when he meets a woman who injures him. Who is this woman, and why did she target him? He is now wondering who exactly that woman is, what ties she has to him, and why they are after him.

Cule Hinder wrote a true page turner with The Night Doctor. It includes every element you would want, and expect, from a good novel. It is nicely written, and reads very smoothly. At no point during the novel was I bored or anxious to put it down. I stayed up a couple of nights just to finish.

Highly recommend, it will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Thriller Thursday Book Review

Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: A Sealed Fate (Kindle Edition)
A SEALED FATE by Lisa Gordon is well written with strong characters and an exciting plot. The main character, Valda, an assertive, exciting, adventurous, intelligent, mystical and sexy woman has no problem carrying the novel from beginning to end. Valda is a creative woman who lives life on the wild side and acts like a cat who has nine lives. She doesn’t bring a lot of girly-girl baggage, but she is affectionate and feminine. The story takes us to exotic locations, introduces us to shady characters and shows us the seamy side of Dubai; the middle east’s bustling new hot spot. There were many times during the story where I was squirming in my seat, whispering “Don’t do it, Valda,” but she went ahead and did it!

Lisa Gordon’s writing style sets a tempo that keeps the story going, constantly moving the plot forward with action, confrontations, decisions and mystery. I liked how the author puts the reader right into the local flavor by taking us out on the streets at night and into the clubs, restaurants, offices and homes in Dubai and South Africa. Reading this story made me hungry because the author, Lisa Gordon, describes many sumptuous meals and snacks. A couple times having to go with the main character into one restaurant after another for meals that were described in detail and then hear lengthy dialog dragged a little bit, but that’s really a minor criticism. I want to read more by Lisa Gordon, and I hope she pushes her sense of humor and flair for action and mild erotica to the next level. This book is just the start to a writing career that is going to bring us female main characters who continue to set the pace of exciting romantic adventure.

A SEALED FATE – Mystery Thriller Set in Dubai.

‘As you read through it, you might say, “Oh…I see where this is going,” but believe me, you don’t.’ Susannah St Clair Foxy Loxy (Vine Voice)

A SEALED FATE

A chain of tragic deaths across Dubai spanning two decades, only Valda knows they were not accidents, but murders.

Her name is next on that list….. Spunky singer Valda ditches her old life in Cape Town for a new start in glittering Dubai. Armed with just her cigarettes and some attitude she sets about reigniting her career and putting to bed the heartache over her former boyfriend Richard.

Valda does indeed find success and to her astonishment love, but all is threatened when she is introduced to a billionaire Sheikh. Her clandestine liaison with the Sheikh, propels her into a murky web of deceit and when newspaper clippings of seemingly accidental deaths across Dubai are posted anonymously to her it is clear she is rushing headlong into the same fate. No one dare cross the Sheikh and she can hardly hardly turn to the law, so with few options open she confides in Larissa.

As an astrologer, Larissa predicts that Valda and the Sheikh’s destinies were sealed from the moment of their first meeting; however she keeps the dire fate that she reads in the charts a secret. Together, Valda and Larissa take a gamble in a game of cosmic Russian Roulette where the stakes are their lives and their adversary, Fate itself.

A thoroughly modern cocktail of intrigue, passion and suspense set against the exotic locales of Cape Town and Dubai with an eclectic mix of characters, a perfect beverage if you like a tangy lemon peel in your drink as this one has a twist at the end too, but you’ll have to read it to discover it.

A riveting read. Cleverly written this modern suspense thriller charts the story of Valda and is set in the exotic but dangerous locations of Cape Town and Dubai. Containing destiny, fate, karma, intrigue and passion it is an edge of the seat read. Its emotional impact is chilling and often quite scary and its tight description and dialogue create real tension. That said it is an easy read and has an easy plot that suddenly shakes you with its swift turns. The journeys between Cape Town and Dubai are very tense and often chilling. The atmosphere and culture of Cape Town and Dubai come alive on the page and Gordon cleverly weaves all this into easy dialogue and vivid descriptions. Once the reader is comfortable with the story along comes another sudden twist. The storytelling is compelling and moves at a fast pace making the book difficult to put down.
The characters are well written and relationships both warm and friendly through to cold and chilling. Valda soon realises that a chain of tragic deaths across Dubai over the last twenty years were not accidents but murders and her name is next on the list. As this unfolds Lisa Gordon keeps the reader guessing as Valda’s relationships with Richard, the Sheik and his bodyguard Ahmed, Charles and Brett develop. Her professional meeting with Larissa turns into friendship and a strong sense of trust between the two as they unwittingly test the assumptions of fate, free will and destiny. All the time I felt I knew what was going to happen next, then was quickly sent in another direction.
Well worth reading, I look forward to reading more novels by Lisa Gordon.

WHAT DID REVIEWERS SAY?

“It certainly proved to be a good read. This excellent reads starts you out with a bang as you experience the killing of a young teen, but why? What does this have to do with the rest of the story? Ah! Our author draws you in with the ‘I have to find out,’ trick. It’s been a while since I have read a book that takes you around so many curves in the story and yet at the end ties all the notes into one bow. This one does.
It is a tale of murder and suspense, family and friends, trust and betrayal, all tightly weaved within the read. The character development is excellent, as is the description of locals, bringing everything to life in the mind’s eye. I loved how it ended, although perhaps a bit sad in some ways, the author definitely brought all the mysterious pieces together. I am happy to recommend this book, a very well written read and well worth your time.” SHIRLEY P JOHNSON AMAZON TOP 1000 REVIEWER.

“Ever wonder what happened to those stories filled with suspense with twists and turns? You know the kind that Alfred Hitchcock produced, making us bite our nails and worry for the hero or heroine! Well Lisa Gordon has penned that type of thriller and it’s worth reading. Her heroine, Gaby thought she was leading an ideal life. She was a rising star in her legal firm and just married a handsome man. Then the nightmares started plaguing her and memories of a childhood trauma erupted. To save her sanity Gaby must delve into the secrets of a serial killer and risk her own life to bring him to justice.

I really enjoyed this suspenseful novel! It reminded me of a Hitchcock thriller, filled with danger but not depending on blood, guts, and gore like modern novels. This is a thriller that delivers chills while chasing an elusive killer. You won’t know until the final pages if this clever killer escapes. Gaby evolved from a society socialite into a brave woman fighting for justice. Pick up this book and enjoy a story worthy of Hitchcock.”  DIANNE RAPP

“What if you suspected a relative of yours is a serial killer? What would you do? That’s the premise of this outstanding thriller murder mystery. I was caught up in the story right from page one. It’s the sort of story where you know what the outcome should be, but aren’t really sure the heroine will survive? Seeing it all unfold is really worth the read. This book comes highly recommended.” JAMES HOAG

“Absolutely loved this book. Once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with the characters & the story line..I couldn’t wait to see what was gonna happen next. The characters are so real you seemed to really connect with them. I found myself feeling the sadness, frustration, & triumph with them. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I can’t wait to read more…Waiting very impatiently for her next book.” JULIE’S BOOK REVIEW
