A_SEALED_FATE1

A chain of tragic deaths across Dubai spanning two decades. Only Valda knows they were not accidents, but murders. Her name is next on that list.

Spunky singer Valda ditches her old life in Cape Town for a new start in glittering Dubai. Armed with just her cigarettes and some attitude, she sets about reigniting her career and putting to bed the heartache over her former boyfriend Richard.

Valda does indeed find success, and to her astonishment, love, but all is threatened when she is introduced to a billionaire sheikh. Her clandestine liaison with the sheikh propels her into a murky web of deceit, and when newspaper clippings of seemingly accidental deaths across Dubai are posted anonymously to her, it is clear she is rushing headlong into the same fate. No one dares cross the sheikh and she can hardly hardly turn to the law, so with few options open she confides in Larissa. As an astrologer, Larissa predicts that Valda and the sheikh’s destinies were sealed from the moment of their first meeting; however she keeps the dire fate that she reads in the charts a secret. Lara resolves to help Valda flee Dubai and the ever-tightening grip of the sheikh; but should Valda be putting all her faith in her new friend and guru of the grimoires?

Together, Valda and Larissa take a gamble in a game of cosmic Russian roulette where the stakes are their lives, and their adversary, Fate itself.

A thoroughly modern cocktail of intrigue, passion, and suspense set against the exotic locales of Cape Town and Dubai with an eclectic mix of characters, a perfect beverage if you like a tangy lemon peel in your drink as this one has a twist at the end too, but you’ll have to listen to discover it.

ENJOY!!!  Ideal for summer reading.

Can Jack ever be entirely sure that Stanhope wasn’t behind this coincidence? Although he does not yet know it Valda and her band mate, Renee, are also tied up with Stanhope and Lagunov, two of the London high society power brokers who quaff Moet in their clubs whilst they decide the fate of others.

This was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read recently. It was well written, engaging and suspenseful! A must read for suspense fans!
At first I knew what to expect but as the book progressed it became more challenging to figure out the missing pieces of the puzzle. I liked this book a lot, quick read, entertaining, twists and thrills!

It took a little time to get wrapped up in it, not due to a poor quality of writing but rather the author carefully laying the groundwork for the story. If you like classic “who done its” in the style of Hitchcock, you will enjoy this story.

Memories are not always a good thing. Sometimes they are scary and should stay locked away. However the truth should be known. I was worried what would happen to Gaby. There are a lot of moments in the book when I was surprised. There are a few plots that I had no idea how they were connected until the author told me. The ending was fitting for Gaby and I liked how the author tied up loose ends. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

Things was an interesting and quick read in which the author kept me engaged throughout the book. Be careful because once the ball gets rolling in this one, you won’t be able to put it down. Despite knowing who the murderer was fairly early on, Gordon does an amazing job at keeping you interested and engaged throughout the story. I did have to use the dictionary/Wikipedia feature on my kindle for some of the language but the book was definitely worth the little bit of extra “work” & I look forward to reading another book from this author soon.

A string of murders dating back to 1987 and in all that time only one witness and she doesn’t even know she’s a witness!

Young lawyer Gaby has recently married and should be having the time of her life and yet a strange recurring dream is haunting her; she visits a psychologist and a psychic as she desperately attempts to figure it out. Then……it hits her; the memory floods back! Suddenly everything she thought she knew about herself, her family and her past is cast into doubt.

Someone she loves is a KILLER.

But who will believe her? He is popular, successful, charming and credible. The police will say that she has no evidence. People will call her mad, paranoid and spiteful. She must act fast; he is becoming more frenzied and is eyeing up his next victim.

Gaby selects her allies with great care, trusting few in her duplicitous new world and knowing every new piece of evidence she uncovers makes her more vulnerable.

She sets about assembling the evidence: secretively and urgently, before he strikes again. However, he gets wind of her suspicions and this time when he kills, it’s someone very close to Gaby, someone who knows the truth.

Suddenly she realises that she is up against more than just him: he has eminent and influential friends and the scales of justice are rigged against her.

What would you do? What will Gaby do?

A book that will make you wonder if you can ever trust anyone again and the safe answer…..is NO.

Thriller Thursday Book Review

This review is from: A Sealed Fate (Kindle Edition)
A SEALED FATE by Lisa Gordon is well written with strong characters and an exciting plot. The main character, Valda, an assertive, exciting, adventurous, intelligent, mystical and sexy woman has no problem carrying the novel from beginning to end. Valda is a creative woman who lives life on the wild side and acts like a cat who has nine lives. She doesn’t bring a lot of girly-girl baggage, but she is affectionate and feminine. The story takes us to exotic locations, introduces us to shady characters and shows us the seamy side of Dubai; the middle east’s bustling new hot spot. There were many times during the story where I was squirming in my seat, whispering “Don’t do it, Valda,” but she went ahead and did it!

Lisa Gordon’s writing style sets a tempo that keeps the story going, constantly moving the plot forward with action, confrontations, decisions and mystery. I liked how the author puts the reader right into the local flavor by taking us out on the streets at night and into the clubs, restaurants, offices and homes in Dubai and South Africa. Reading this story made me hungry because the author, Lisa Gordon, describes many sumptuous meals and snacks. A couple times having to go with the main character into one restaurant after another for meals that were described in detail and then hear lengthy dialog dragged a little bit, but that’s really a minor criticism. I want to read more by Lisa Gordon, and I hope she pushes her sense of humor and flair for action and mild erotica to the next level. This book is just the start to a writing career that is going to bring us female main characters who continue to set the pace of exciting romantic adventure.

A Weird and Wonderful Tapestry BOOK REVIEW – NEXT of SIN

REVIEW for NEXT OF SIN A Psychological thriller.

I have looked out for Lisa Gordon’s books since I read her debut novel A Sealed Fate because I felt then she had a gift for quirky but credible plots and I wondered how that would develop. Next of Sin is her second offering in a similar genre, which I would place really as a fusion of the crime (serial murder) novel, the thriller / adventure novel with a fair bit of Chick-lit interest also thrown in. Once again she doesn’t disappoint with the quirky plot. It’s another serial murder plot with a twist; there are echoes of Enderby in that it’s not so much a whodunnit as a case of the lead character (Gaby) having the dilemma of how does she expose the murderer to an incredulous world before he gets to her first?

Gaby is a great heroine but there again I like Gordon’s heroines. I loved Valda in her first book and I love Gaby in this one. They are probably chalk and cheese. Valda is the tough cookie with the soft centre and Gaby is soft on the outside but with a quartzite core, which comes out in her determination. She is also very spiritual, which isn’t a surprise with Gordon novels as she likes to introduce an element of astrology or the occult. Gaby would be a candidate for the examination room marked Canonization except you are willing her to go through the door of the next one. This, by the way, is marked Carnalization. She’s a bit of both but shouldn’t all nice girls have that in their locker? You will be only too willing to kneel down to prayers with her, if that’s what she wants, but you can’t but hope that the missionary position will figure somewhere.

It’s a fast-paced symphony: there’s the first movement where it hits you in the solar plexus to start with as the villain gets off on a rampage; and then the slower movement where the author brings you back into the world of weddings and honeymoons and girls with top jobs thinking about their own empowerment and only secondarily about their men. The blokes are certainly not at the centre of their universe; they are satellites there for their interest and sporadic devotion. It is the kind of role-reversal you would expect from a woman writer who knows her own mind and prizes her own individuality above all other things and looks on men in the fond but slightly dismissive way that men have traditionally looked upon women. Then there’s the third movement, an endgame, a race against time, particularly from the moment that the villain begins to understand that Gaby and others are on the case. They are eliminated one by one.

You will know what I mean by quirky when you discover Gaby’s family are actually rooting for the villain. A weird and wonderful tapestry of human emotions, which definitely gets my vote and I can see how her writing has developed too. She has a much more assured touch now as if she has found her voice.

A Sealed Fate Creates Quite the Scene

REVIEW by STEVE of A SEALED FATE

ASFa

Thrillers can be so cookie cutter today, so it was nice to encounter one that clearly was not. A Sealed Fate draws readers in by setting a fantastic scene: an outsider’s view of Dubai.

And setting, for thrillers, is so important. To really feel the tension, one must be able to really see the setting, to imagine oneself in it. It’s no easy task, but Lisa Gordon does it well, painting for us a detailed picture of life in Dubai, providing us with a variety of creative, independent characters that make the plot pop even more.

Valda is a woman with a broken past, seeking a new start, a new life, in a new land. But as things seem to be turning in her favor, she meets a billionaire sheikh, and all bets are off. Her friend, Larissa, an astrologer, tells her that both she and the shadowy sheikh are sealed together (hence the title), but at the same time, she keeps some secrets back from Valda.

Gordon’s novel is a short one, and that works in its favor. She keeps her plot moving at a quick pace which keeps the reader’s attention, yet she doesn’t quicken it enough to skirt around character depth or setting detail. It’s the type of book that is easily read in a few sittings (or even one, if you’re truly hooked!), but it stays with you as well. Gordon’s writing style lends itself well to mystery and suspense. If she keeps it up (which I’m sure she will), she’ll have plenty of more great stories coming our way!

SHOCK AFTER SHOCK

BOOK REVIEW of NEXT of SIN by Glyn Smith-Wild

What do you do if you discover that someone very close to you is a killer?
That’s what this book is all about. Lisa describes the doubts, the conflicts of emotion and the raw feelings of reality as the story unfolds. The protagonist, Gaby, and her friends come across with consummate reality, and before the end of the book, you come to know them very well.
Lisa has either travelled widely, or really knows how to use Google Earth. No matter, the descriptions of the many international venues come across vividly, and you feel yourself transported to each of them.
I think I would have given this book a five star rating were it not for the number of typos. It is only because of that that I have awarded four stars.

Ever wonder what happened to those stories filled with suspense with twists and turns? You know the kind that Alfred Hitchcock produced, making us bite our nails and worry for the hero or heroine! Well Lisa Gordon has penned that type of thriller and it’s worth reading. Her heroine, Gaby thought she was leading an ideal life. She was a rising star in her legal firm and just married a handsome man. Then the nightmares started plaguing her and memories of a childhood trauma erupted. To save her sanity Gaby must delve into the secrets of a serial killer and risk her own life to bring him to justice.   Dianne Rapp

Absolutely loved this book. Once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. I fell in love with the characters & the story line..I couldn’t wait to see what was gonna happen next. The characters are so real you seemed to really connect with them. I found myself feeling the sadness, frustration, & triumph with them. This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I can’t wait to read more…Waiting very impatiently for her next book.  Jennifer’s Bookk Review

The story had its glowing moments and yes, the villain was extremely creepy, in fact, I think the villain was actually my favorite character in this book. He was smarter than everyone, and went for a very long time doing whatever he pleased without anyone being the wiser. If it wasn’t for Gaby’s slip under peer pressure to smoke a joint he may never have been found out. I felt he controlled the entire story.  Tina Marie Says

I was happy to receive this book for an honest review. It certainly proved to be a good read. This excellent reads starts you out with a bang as you experience the killing of a young teen, but why? What does this have to do with the rest of the story? Ah! Our author draws you in with the ‘I have to find out,’ trick. It’s been a while since I have read a book that takes you around so many curves in the story and yet at the end ties all the notes into one bow. This one does.  Shirley Johnson Amazon Top 100 Reviewer

Matron only gives five starts when they are deserved. This tale does. Why:

Oh it isn’t literary genius. And the writing is simple. And the characters obvious. And some of the scenes are utterly chick-lit but for all that it’s what we buy books for : a riveting read and you can’t put it down. So few books do that now. Books don’t have to be clever.

So, young boy gets kick out of killing girl. Years later a series of murders all come together. And you realise his family are involved. And there’s a race to stop him, of course.

Just a good book. No more. What it says on the packet and we don’t always get. I’ll buy Lisa again.  London Matron

Review for A SEALED FATE

A riveting read.

Cleverly written this modern suspense thriller charts the story of Valda and is set in the exotic but dangerous locations of Cape Town and Dubai. Containing destiny, fate, karma, intrigue and passion it is an edge of the seat read. Its emotional impact is chilling and often quite scary and its tight description and dialogue create real tension. That said it is an easy read and has an easy plot that suddenly shakes you with its swift turns.Image The journeys between Cape Town and Dubai are very tense and often chilling. The atmosphere and culture of Cape Town and Dubai come alive on the page and Gordon cleverly weaves all this into easy dialogue and vivid descriptions. Once the reader is comfortable with the story along comes another sudden twist. The storytelling is compelling and moves at a fast pace making the book difficult to put down.
The characters are well written and relationships both warm and friendly through to cold and chilling. Valda soon realises that a chain of tragic deaths across Dubai over the last twenty years were not accidents but murders and her name is next on the list. As this unfolds Lisa Gordon keeps the reader guessing as Valda’s relationships with Richard, the Sheik and his bodyguard Ahmed, Charles and Brett develop. Her professional meeting with Larissa turns into friendship and a strong sense of trust between the two as they unwittingly test the assumptions of fate, free will and destiny. All the time I felt I knew what was going to happen next, then was quickly sent in another direction.
Well worth reading, I look forward to reading more novels by Lisa Gordon.
